GOVERNMENT HATCHES PLAN TO PREVENT HIKE IN EGG PRICES
The government says it has asked eggs farmers to hold off on plans to increase egg prices this week.
The farmers say rising production costs including higher feed prices are making it challenging for them to sustain their operations.
Cabinet believes a price hike would also cause local eggs to lose price competitiveness and open the market for cheaper imports.
The country is currently self-sufficient in eggs and the government wants to ensure this continues.
Information Minister Hon. Melford Nicholas says the Trade and Agriculture Ministries are already working to find egg farmers cheaper feed sources within Caricom and the wider Caribbean.
