AG VOWS ‘STRONGER MEASURES AT PORTS OF ENTRY’ TO STEM FLOW OF ILLEGAL GUNS

A special taskforce has been established to spearhead efforts to intercept illegal weapons being smuggled into the country.

Attorney General and Public Safety Minister, Hon. Sir Steadroy Benjamin, says the crackdown includes stronger measures at the ports of entry and intensified surveillance at some of the nation’s beaches.

The attorney general says it is crucial that law enforcement intercepts these illegal weapons before they get to the criminal underworld.

This has been a perennial challenge for Antigua and Barbuda and other Caribbean island nations with porous borders.

Cabinet recently authorized the purchase of a state-of-the-art scanner for the cargo port at Deepwater Harbour to detect illegal weapons and other contraband being smuggled into the country.

Sir Steadroy told ABS News on Tuesday he could not disclose details because of the sensitive nature of the initiatives.
