skerrit_463730296Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has dashed hopes of an early general election even as he called on Dominicans to begin debating “the requirements for the nomination of a candidate for prime minister”. Skerrit, speaking at the delegates conference of his ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) in the southern village of Point Michel on Sunday, said he wanted to hear from the various stakeholders, including the business community, the churches, the legal profession  and civil society on the issue. He said he wanted to hear “especially from Sir Brian Alleyne”, the former acting Chief Justice of the OECS Supreme Court, as well as radio talk show hosts and “from the dozens who regularly call in on their radio programmes on what in your view are the eligibility requirements for the post of prime minister in modern day Dominica”. Skerrit said that now that the debate on a candidate for the position of President “are behind us, let’s turn our attention to the election of a prime minister in a not too distant future”. General elections are constitutionally due by 2015 and Skerrit, who in the past had been hinting at facing the electorate in a snap poll, told supporters Sunday that the polls may not necessarily be around the corner.
