BARBADOS EYES BECOMING A REPUBLIC BY 2021

Barbados has announced plans to become a republic by November of next year. It is now a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth as Head of State, but wants to sever ties with the monarchy and instead have a president as head of state. The announcement was made this morning by Governor General Dame Sandra Mason, ironically in the Throne speech during the opening of the New Parliamentary session in Bridgetown. If Barbados goes through with the plans to become a republic, it will join Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana among Caricom’s ‘Big Four’ to remove the queen as head of state.
