CABINET MULLS INCREASE IN PRISONERS’ STIPEND OF 17 CENTS PER DAY

Cabinet has discussed whether prisoners should get an increase on their 17-cent daily stipend, as part of a broader reform of the penal system.

The issue was discussed during the meeting of the executive branch of government on Wednesday, amid an increased focus on rehabilitation behind prison walls.

The aim is for the inmates to become more productive ahead of their reintegration into society upon completion of their sentences.

Prisoners who serve at least 6 months in prison get $0.17 per day upon their release, a provision in place for several years.

Government spokesman, Maurice Merchant, says cabinet weighed arguments for a possible increase, though no decision was taken.
