Douglas Malcolm Grant presently residing at Barnes Hill Village was born on December 23rd 1921 in Cooks Hill. He’s also resided in Cooks Hill, Old Road, and Pigotts. 

 

Douglas Malcolm Grant is the only child of Wilhelmina Best née Carlisle and Leonard Grant Sr. His grandparents were David and Sarah Parker nee Jacobs of Cooks Hill. Malcolm Grant was married to the late Nurse Ina May-Carty Grant where that union nurtured five children, namely: Mr. Fred and Mrs. Blondel Osborne – Banker(retired), currently residing in Canada Mr. Leonard and Mrs. Selina Grant – Government Chief Chemist (retired) Mr. Lesroy and Mrs. Rholanda Grant – Agronomist Nurse Patricia Grant – (deceased) Dr. Hercules and Mrs. Faith Grant – Physiotherapist, currently residing in Canada. 

A member of the Greenbay Moravian Church, his favorite Hymns are The Trumpet , Ship Ahoy  and  Jesus Saves. Scriptures that he wholeheartedly subscribes to are as follows John 3:16  and the The Ten Commandments, in particularly command number 4 which states : “Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” KJV 10. 

Malcolm’s profession was a businessman where he owned and operated heavy duty machinery i.e. tractors, trucks, haulage equipment. He ultimately retired in 1980. However, prior to his business enterprises, Malcolm was engaged in a number of private sector farming activities on his parent’s farm in Bathlodge. He later gained employment at the United States’ Air Force Base in Coolidge where he was a heavy-duty operator. On leaving the American Base, he sought employment at the Antigua Syndicate Estate Company, where he was employed as a Tractor operator; he worked in excess of twenty years. In 1958, he was advised by his father-in-law, the late Hercules Carty of Barbuda, to invest in tractors. This was a successful endeavour where he cultivated lands at Coconut Hall, Parham Lodge, Longfords as well as other agricultural areas within Antigua and Barbuda. Throughout his career, Douglas Malcolm Grant aka Manny was considered to be the best tractor operator in particular the preparation of agricultural lands. During that business enterprise he trained a number of young men in the community in the area of tractor maintenance and operation. Some of his notable trainees were Carmona Samuel aka Calypso Farmer, Fitzroy Thwaites aka Sample from New Winthropes and Steadman Gomes from the Village of Parham. Malcolm, Manny, Mr. Grant as he is known throughout the various communities is typified as the ultimate philanthropist in providing financial support to the needy. It was very common as he walked through the communities of New Winthorpes, Barnes Hill and even St. John’s that whenever a request was made in cash or kind, he gladly offered his assistance in that regard. Mr. Grant, Manny, Malcolm is still very well respected in the communities.  

Some of his favourite foods are Ducana, soursops, mangos and papayas. While his favourite colour is blue. 

He is not bedridden and is active. In his opinion, he has attributed his longevity to a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables and physical exercise. He further indicated that contentment is the key to longevity. Ultimately, he recognises God for his grace and mercy extended to him
