Ministry Clarifies Unauthorized School Simulation Exercise

Published

on

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology wishes to assure parents, guardians and the general public that there was no intrusion, armed or otherwise, at any school in Antigua and Barbuda today, 2nd October 2026.

The activity at Jennings Secondary School was a simulation exercise organised by the school, intended to provide members of its community with practical drill experience in responding to a potential intrusion. The Ministry wishes to make clear that this exercise was not authorized. It was planned and carried out without the knowledge or permission of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The Ministry is aware that the exercise was captured on a mobile phone video recording, which shows a masked male figure armed with what appears to be a rifle. The video also shows students running in all directions while screaming.

Emergency drills are important to school safety. However, such exercises must have the prior approval of the Ministry and be supported by clear communication and careful coordination to minimize misunderstanding and undue distress.

Neither was in place on this occasion.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology sincerely apologizes for the alarm and panic endured by students, parents, guardians and the wider public, who were unaware of the activity.

The Ministry remains committed to the safety and well-being of all students and school personnel and thanks the general public for its understanding.
