VOLCANIC ACTVITY BEING MONITORED IN DOMINICA

Reports of emissions from Dominica’s Soufriere area have triggered calls for residents to be on alert for volcanic activity.

The Office of Disaster Management, ODM has assured the emissions are being investigated and the public will be updated.

ODM coordinator, Fitzroy Pascal is quoted by the Caribbean Media Corporation as indicating that the entity is in contact with the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

The SRC is responsible for monitoring seismic activity in Dominica.

Pascal has advised residents to stay clear of the area until further notice.

The largest area of geothermal activity is located on the margin of the Soufrière depression in the Sulphur Springs National Park region.

Dominica has the highest concentration of dormant volcanoes in the world.
