Chemical Spill At VC Bird International Airport

Flights arriving and departing the V.C Bird International Airport had to be halted for about two hours on Thursday because of a chemical spill which disrupted operations at the Control Tower.

The incident resulted in a shut down the tower as measures were put in place to rectify the problem.

CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority Stanley Smith spoke to our newsroom earlier this evening about what happened.

A number of flights were affected including British Airways, American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

The type of chemical which caused the disruption is still not yet known, but a report as to what transpired should be submitted to the CEO by noon on Friday.
