Sod was turned to symbolically signal the start of work on a US$90 million port development project at the Deep Water Harbour Monday evening.
A fully modern port will replace the facilities in which employees, businesses and members of the public have been forced to use.
Board Chairman Senator Mary Clare Hurst says it is a fitting and deserving cap to a list of crucial achievements.
Also at the ceremony was the President of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China’s ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda Wang Kianmin.
In delivering the feature address, Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his government deserves credit for moving an idea into reality.
He says his government has turned around the fortunes of the port, putting in a stronger position to access the concessionary financing that was necessary to get the project off the ground.
