APUA WORKS TO IMPROVE WATER AND ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

Cabinet says it’ll cost 37-million-dollars to purchase replacements for broken cast iron pipes that serve St. John’s City.

Chief of Staff in the PM Office Ambassador Lionel Hurst says leakage from the century-old mains causes a loss of about 7 million gallons of water daily.

He says there’s also an issue of mud seeping into the mains.

He says the government is working to source the funds. The work will be done in increments to minimize disruptions.

In the meantime, the Chief of Staff says suppression in electricity around the country is a result of upgrades being made to the country’s electrical system.

APUA publishes schedules to indicate what areas are expected to be affected at specific times.

Ambassador Hurst says the state-owned utility company has attempted to stick to the schedule as much as possible but sometimes things do not go as planned.

Part of the problem, he says, has been inclement weather.
