Barbuda International Airport To Be Renamed on Independence Day

The promised renaming of the international airport in Barbuda will take place this Independence Day, November 1.

The facility will officially be named the Burton-Nibbs International Airport, in honour of two of the sister island’s prominent political figures, Sir Eric Burton and Arthur Nibbs.

The renaming will take place some two years after the airport became operational in October 2024.

The upcoming ceremony will also see several streets in Barbuda being renamed.

The airport represents a significant upgrade from the 1,640-foot runway at the former airport at Codrington.

With a runway that is both longer and wider, the new international airport can accommodate larger aircraft, including private jets and aircraft such as the Embraer E-170.

The new runway can also accommodate night-time landing with LED lighting installed, a first for Barbuda.
