Chess Sets donated to Support After-Class Sessions
St.John’s (October 16 ) — Her Excellency Lady Sandra Williams, President of the Halo Foundation, and Lady Mahasen Hadeed visited Cedar Grove Primary School recently to celebrate learning, encourage youth development, and strengthen educational opportunities for children in the community.
During the visit, the distinguished guests presented John Nathan and his teaching partner Mr. Kofe James , as well as the school’s Chess Club with 20 chess sets, enabling the club to more successfully continue after-class strategic chess sessions. The donation underscores the importance of inclusive activities that promote both academic enrichment and character development among young learners.
The visit also included meaningful discussions with the school’s leadership and teaching staff. Her Excellency Lady Sandra Williams and Lady Mahasen Hadeed met with Mrs. Anthony, the Headmistress and Class Teacher Mrs.Gonsalves, to explore how the Halo Foundation and its partners could continue supporting Cedar Grove Primary School through small, practical initiatives tailored to the school’s needs and geared towards improving day-to-day learning experiences.

Chess is widely recognized as more than just a game—it is a structured activity that trains children to think carefully, plan ahead, and learn via strategy. Through consistent participation, this is a game that can help children to build a foundation of skills that are valuable both in and out of the classroom.
There is a requirement for children to evaluate positions, consider consequences, and make decisions based on evidence. Chess strengthens the habit of thoughtful problem-solving rather than impulsive responses.
Amongst many other benefits, chess supports the understanding of patterns, geometry-like board relationships, and logical sequencing. Children often become more confident in tackling puzzles and structured reasoning activities.
