COUNSEL IN DOMINICA WANT MEHUL CHOKSI DEPORTED TO INDIA

Government lawyers in Dominica have reportedly said Mehul Choksi should be deported directly to his native India, instead of to Antigua and Barbuda.

Indian law enforcers are in Dominica, hoping the court will allow them to repatriate Choksi to his homeland to answer fraud charges.

They have reportedly submitted documents to show Choksi did not complete the process to relinquish his Indian citizenship and that he is the subject of an Interpol red corner notice.

The matters are unfolding as Dominica High Court Judge M. E. Birnie Stephenson is hearing arguments in Mehul Choksi’s Habeas Corpus case.

Choksi says he was kidnapped from Antigua & Barbuda last Sunday and taken to Dominica.

Dominican authorities have detained him for illegally entering the country.

Choksi brought the Habeas Corpus matter against Dominica’s Attorney General and Police Chief last week, alleging the authorities were holding him unlawfully.

Reports from journalists in Dominica say the respondents’ lead attorney, Lennox Lawrence asked the court to dismiss the matter.

He has reportedly argued Choksi’s lawyers did not properly file the claim.

However, Choksi’s lawyers have argued the request is unreasonable as the matter is of great public importance.

We will have more on this story in subsequent newscasts.
