The Government Is Now Readying Itself For The Adoption Of The Caribbean Court Of Justice As Its Final Court Of Appeal

The Government has signalled its intention to move towards adopting the Caribbean Court of Justice as its final appellate court.
6c9ca3c570118ad5aba4dad5b00e3b8b_400x400This follows a recommendation made to Cabinet by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon Steadroy Benjamin. According to the Minister…the Cabinet has agreed to the recommendation and advised him to put in place all the necessary arrangements to effect the decision.
Benjamin has now appointed Ambassador to Caricom, Dr. Clarence Henry to spearhead the national engagement and consultation to fully explain the rationale for the adoption of the CCJ in its appellate jurisdiction.
The minister also made it clear that Ambassador Henry will head a national committee of stakeholders that will coordinate and manage the national engagement and consultation on this matter. He wants representation drawn from the trade unions, political parties, Chamber of Commerce, the Bar Association, the Electoral Commission, the Barbuda Council, the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Civil Society, and Media Association.
Benjamin says the Committee’s mandate includes preparing the country to determine the matter by way of a referendum at the end of the consultative process.-30-
