GOVERNMENT AWAITING SHIPMENT OF CONTAINERIZED CELLS

Some inmates at Her Majesty’s prison are expected to move to a new location in a matter of months.

Public Safety Minister, the Honourable Steadroy Benjamin says holding cells have been purchased and are currently being shipped to the country.

The government has previously announced plans to construct a new prison around the same area at Diamonds Estate, where the prison farm is located.

Her Majesty’s prison, the country’s sole penitentiary was built in 1735 to accommodate 150 prisoners. Today, some 300 inmates are housed at the facility.
