A&B ON THE VERGE OF RECEIVING NATURAL GAS SHIPMENTS FOR NEW POWER PLANT
Prime Minister the Right Hon. Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda could begin receiving Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipments within a month.
The fuel, which is cleaner and more cost-effective than heavy fuel oil in generating electricity, will be used at the new power plant on the Crabbs Peninsula.
There have been delays in accommodating LNG shipments because the dredging of the Crabbs Channel has been slowed by exceptionally hard rock.
This plant has been constructed by Antigua Power Company at a cost of about US$50 million.
The nearby LNG terminal has been developed by Caribbean LNG, a joint venture between Antigua Power Company and US-based Eagle LNG, based.
The use of natural gas to generate electricity at the plant will help to reduce electricity costs, as well as the country’s carbon emissions.
