Highway Visibility

The Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board will be embarking on a project aimed at increasing visibility on the highways across the country.

This follows two road fatalities within two months, with the latest occurring during the evening on a poorly lit main road.

Government’s Chief of Staff, Lionel Hurst, has revealed plans to erect a number of street lights across the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

Hurst says Chairman of the Transport Board, the Hon. Dean Jonas, has made a proposal to Cabinet, with recommendations to make use of a number of street lights discovered in a container at the Multipurpose Cultural Center.

The main intent is to make the country’s main roads less dangerous at night.

This comes in response to recent complaints by motorists and pedestrians to increase visibility on main roads, and follows a road accident which claimed the life of Caroline John-Baptiste as she walked along the poorly lit All Saints Main Road.

The accident which occurred on Sunday is still under investigation by police who say they have obtained statements about the collision from two eyewitnesses.

Police, however, are still appealing to anyone with pertinent information related to the crash to come forward.

A probe into the accident and a postmortem to determine the specific cause of John-Baptiste’s death are both scheduled for next week.
