Government plans to put in place a grace period before the new Telecommunications Bill takes effect after it receives parliamentary approval.

Telecommunications Minister, Hon. Melford Nicholas, says debate on the bill will take place mid-July when the House of Representatives reconvenes its meeting.

According to Minister Nicholas…the debate has been delayed for a number of reasons…including a recent request from the parliamentary opposition leader for more time to study the provisions of the bill.

But he believes that when it comes up again in about three weeks…the bill will get the approval of the House and the Senate when it goes to the upper chamber.

Several telecommunications companies have asked for this grace period to put in place measures that will bring them in line with the provisions of the new telecoms Bill.
