NODS and Other Agencies Respond to Seepage from Cooks Landfill

Published

on

The National Office of Disaster Services has partially activated the National Emergency Operations Centre, as it works in tandem with other agencies to address a seepage of contaminants from the Cooks Landfill into Hermitage Bay. The remedial action is being guided by the National Marine Pollution Manual.

NODS says the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Coast Guard received a report about the seepage on Thursday, February 12 from the Pilot Station at the Antigua Port Authority in St John’s.

Containment of the seepage and water quality testing are among the actions to be carried out and NODS says several pieces of equipment have been deployed to undertake this work.

Members of the public are being advised that fishing and recreational activities have been restricted in the area from Seaforth Beach to Pinching Bay as a result of the situation.
