POLICE GET POWER TO USE SEARCH WARRANTS IF THEY SUSPECT ‘ANY OFFENCE’
The police can now use search warrants more broadly in their crime-fighting efforts.
Parliament’s Lower House has approved major changes to the law governing search warrants, expanding when they can be issued, what they can cover, and when they can be executed.
Attorney General and Minister for Public Safety, Hon. Sir Steadroy Benjamin, says the Magistrates’ Code of Procedure (Amendment) Bill 2026 is making it easier for justice to be done.
Previously, warrants were mainly linked to offences such as larceny and felonies.
Magistrates can now issue a search warrant if there is reasonable cause to suspect any offence.
