PM Gaston Browne Celebrates Cricketing Success

Prime Minister the Right Honourable Gaston Browne opened the batting in a winning performance by Caribbean leaders at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium during Antigua and Barbuda’s independence celebrations on Sunday.

Prime Minister Browne retired not out on a run-a-ball 4, as heads of Government and ministers of the Commonwealth Caribbean defeated a Rest of the Commonwealth XI by 15 runs.

Prime Minister Browne’s fellow opener, Vincentian Prime Minister, Dr Godwin Friday, made 9 from 6 balls, before also retiring not out in the T5 rubber.

The Rest of the Caribbean XI, who conceded 19 extras, were then restricted to 23 for 1 in their 5 overs.

There were enthusiastic celebrations by the Caribbean leaders and ministers, who had tried, with varying levels of success, to reprise the fitness and skills of the past.

The contest was the first of a two-match celebration of cricket, as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s historic hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

All the world’s top cricketing nations are in the Commonwealth, a voluntary grouping of 56 sovereign nations, mainly former colonies of the British empire.
