Government Considers Expanding Windfall Tax to Fund Higher Education
The government of Antigua and Barbuda is considering expanding its existing windfall tax to include more profitable businesses as part of efforts to strengthen funding for tertiary education.
Cabinet has discussed a proposal that would extend the current 10% levy beyond the telecommunications, banking, insurance, and energy sectors. Under the proposed change, companies earning annual profits of EC$1 million or more could also be required to contribute.
At present, the tax applies only to select high-earning sectors, but officials say widening the base would increase revenue to support expanding education commitments.
