Published

A Bendals man was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison for two separate drug-related charges.

37-year-old Damar Stappleton was arrested and charged for importing 20 pounds of cannabis into the country on March 13.

He was further charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to distribute and involvement in cannabis supply.

Police say these alleged offenses took place at the Deep-Water Harbour.

Stappleton is also on remand for similar offenses he allegedly committed on March 7, 2024.

During a joint operation by the Police and Customs Officers, 41 packages of cannabis weighing a total of 41 pounds were seized.

The probe into both matters led to Stappleton being arrested and charged.
He is currently awaiting trial scheduled for July 9, 2024.

While I don’t support drug use, and have never done it myself, why do we still remand people to prison for trafficking in cannabis? I believe that’s the man’s trade or occupation: I believe that’s what he lives by; that’s what’s provide him sustenance.

I know that the use of cannabis can pose a danger to young people’s health, but they still do it anyway. I think that some time in the recent past our Government was talking about decriminalizing the use, and possibly, the trafficking of cannabis in light of new trends in the Western world: so, what has happened to all that talk?

Remanding this guy to prison, and the Court later imposing a prison term on him of, perhaps, several years will be an added cost to Government to maintain him in prison: plus, this guy is perhaps now in his best years, at age 37, so a prison term on him is likely to be a significant setback in life.

It appears to me that Government should modernize it’s laws by decrinalizing, stop remanding and imprisoning people for certain kinds of drug use /trafficing, and instead charging them a reasonably high, but affordable, fine for their offences.

Finally, why does Government think it has any right to control people’s lives? The answer maybe: by consensus of the governed. But, is this true? I think many people would love to get the Government off of their backs by simply abolishing it: also disbanding the Police Force, or seriously retraining them to be of greater benefit to society.
